Ancora

A modular affordable houseboat in response to rising sea levels in UK coastal areas

Brief: to create an electric autonomous vehicle with an additional function focussing on the phrase: 'more human, human-less'. With Audi showing particular interest in V2X.

My response: Ancora offers a novel solution to the pressing challenges faced by coastal communities worldwide. As sea levels rise, urbanization reaches its limits, and ecosystems come under threat, Ancora provides a pathway to a more competitive housing ladder.

Ancora isn’t just a housing solution; it’s a vision for affordable sustainable living—one that balances innovation, resilience, and harmony with our planet’s changing landscape.

It utilises natural elements, combining them with future systems to make a typically high upkeep lifestyle on boats easy.

As rising seas threaten coastal areas, Ancora provides hope for a buoyant future by utilising 'dead space' with existing surrounding infrastructure. (In depth features at bottom of page)

The escalation of sea levels is threatening 1 billion homes globally without the correct infrastructure to withstand rising sea levels. By 2050, it is projected that flooding will endanger one out of every six properties in the UK, and by 2080, the frequency of floods is expected to increase by 73%. The relentless rise in sea levels and recurrent flooding are rendering vast areas uninhabitable.

Concurrently, the world’s population is burgeoning, yet the available land is diminishing due to encroaching seas, escalating the cost of housing and essential commodities. The fens accounts for approximately 4% of England’s farmland but produces 7% of the agricultural produce. Urban centres are becoming havens for climate refugees (with 100 million people fleeing homes in 2022 for climate related issues), prioritized for protection by governments as 90% of major cities are on water fronts with 60% of global population in cities by 2030. Despite these challenges, nearly half of the UK’s population yearns for rural living (46%), provided their employment circumstances permit such demand for lifestyle change.
